Whenever you take damage, you gain a permanent +2 to a defensive roll against that (relatively specific) action starting after you take damage. If you successfully defend and avoid damage, you don't get the buff. Criteria cannot be overly vague: i.e. you can get a +2 against pistols or crossbows, but you can't get a +2 against guns or projectiles.
#SoreThumb - No matter how much you try to hide, you're always in the line of sight of the local baddies. There's no science behind it, but you tend to draw aggro whether you like it or not.
