Fidel Ortiz was raised by his mother whom unfortunately passed away due to a terminal illness by the time he was age ten. Never knowing his father or that side of his family, he was taken in by his Grandmother who raised him from then on in Bludhaven. Fidel lived a very standard, run of the mill life, however months after being with his Grandmother, she told him about the secrets of the family. Fidel's father was an Atlantean War Hero, his current whereabouts unknown to everyone as one day he left and never returned, though Fidel's Grandmother lets them know that the last thing his father said to them was he was leaving on a mission. Several months later, after diligent research and attempting to get in contact with Atlantis, Fidel is successful and is brought in to meet with the King. The story of his family lineage was passed onto him by Aquaman and the current status of his father was revealed, deceased. Aquaman decides to take in Fidel and train him to become a hero, like his father. Fidel accepts and from that point on he worked under the guidance of Aquaman, eventually taking the mantle of Aqualad.
Fidel's biggest strengths come from not just his physical appearance or attributes but from within. A very caring individual whom would go the extra mile for someone they just met, so long as he can leave a positive impact, that's what makes him happy. One of the most daring to ever work with Aquaman, willing to take any risk they can to solve any problem no matter how unconventional the action might be. Known throughout the Seven Seas as the funniest person to swim through the Kingdom of Atlantis, their humor is unmatched whether he intended to be funny or not.
However, no one is without flaws. Though they had an aptitude for being a hero, they also had difficulty with their temper, exhibited great recklessness, and a lack of self-control. A bold and practical person who prefers not to play around in any situation which makes him typically insensitive to anyone's feelings. Fidel is also quite impatient at times where he should not be which leads to them taking way TOO many risks. And to make matters worse? He frequently disobeyed Aquaman's direct orders, once where he went too far, injured someone and was striped of the Aqualad mantle at age eighteen. This lead him to go back to the surface for a while, he partook in stopping petty crime from time to time but usually just helped his grandmother with everything she needed. Fidel used a lot of the money he had earned working as a media personality and Atlantean-Surface representative to buy a new home right on the beach.
Adjusting to life not being Aqualad, turning down the Titans and just running around doing his own thing was getting to him in a way where he wish he could start over or go back and prove that he could be a great hero, that he could be something like an Aqualad or Tempest or even a Lagoon Boy. He knows all he needs is one shot, just one, to make things right. Most days he goes out for a swim and just relaxes on the beach, sometimes he fishes to bring in extra money or just to relax. This actually gained him a pet hammerhead shark that he adopted by accident but took in while in anyway. Fidel describes the hammerhead as basically a fish pitbull. His name is Thwack N. Stuff, often times referred to as Thwacky and he is loved.
During his down time, Fidel has been trying to create a new suit with the help of some of Atlantis's best and come up with a new persona to help fight crime in both worlds, Surface and Atlantis, spending free time looking at the ceiling throwing a baseball up and catching it before it comes crashing down each time. Something clicks and he crafts the perfect suit, he comes up with a name and begins to plan ahead. He sets his grandmother up perfectly and has a direct link for her to get assistance by all his Atlantean friends and Surface friends to assist her whenever she needs it, allowing him to shift focus on creating his own way. Just two years of hard work, spiraling and the bounce back into a new-hero was well recieved, brought into missions with the League, a spot he never thought he would have had in his life. In the two years he has been working hard to clean up Santa Prisca and has succeeded quite a bit, it's far more habitable now, crime is down and a entire nation is practically reborn.
The most important people Fidel is his only living biological family member, his grandmother and a friend, Larimar Melo, a fellow hero who is half-human and half Amazonian, who he has feelings for but could never tell her due to the fear of his enemies coming for her. He's been fighting the good fight for the last five years, now twenty-five years old, he meets with the King of Atlantis who has called for him to discuss matters of his father. It is revealed to Fidel by Aquaman that his father was murdered by the terrorist leader of the Deluge, Corum Rath. Fidel storms out in search of him but is whisked away to the archive the minute he whooshes out the door.
