Pokemon General Mechanics
Pokemon have slightly different leveling and stat mechanics than the rest of the game. There are two ways that Pokemon in The Archive gain levels: Effort Values and Stage Bonuses.Effort Values and Base Stat Caps
Every level, a Pokemon gains 3 Effort Value points (EVs) that can be invested in a stat of your choice up to your Pokemon's base stat cap. However, this process is rather intensive for the Pokemon... you won't be able to invest points into the same stat two levels in a row. This means that if, for example, you invest 1 EV each into Robustness, Deftness, and Vitality for level 2, you cannot touch these stats whatsoever when you hit level 3. If you then invested 3 EVs into Intelligence on level 3, you would not be able to invest any points into Intelligence on level 4... but Robustness, Deftness, and Vitality are all fair game once more.
The Pokemon's base stat caps are equivalent to that Pokemon's actual base stats in the Pokemon games. The only modifier on this will be the Pokemon's nature, which will increase one of the Pokemon's base stat caps by 10% and decrease another by 10%. If you're curious as to the conversion from Pokemon stats to Archive stats, it goes as follows:
Robustness = Attack
Deftness = Speed
Vitality = HP or Defense (Whichever is higher for that Pokemon)
Intelligence = Special Attack
Perspicacity = Special Defense
As there is no equivalent stat to Appeal in Pokemon, these caps are decided on a Pokemon by Pokemon basis. Also, Pokemon do not possess a luck stat - any luck roll they would have to do is a pure 1d100 roll. Now, as there is no Appeal stat in Pokemon, there are no natures that affect them. We've added six new Pokemon natures and changed the previously neutral natures to modify Appeal as well. If you're curious, I'll list those now. If you don't care, keep reading after the jump:
Hardy: Increases Robustness/Decreases Appeal
Docile: Increases Vitality/Decreases Appeal
Serious: Increases Deftness/Decreases Appeal
Bashful: Increases Intelligence/Decreases Appeal
Quirky: Increases Perspicacity/Decreases Appeal
Harmless: Increases Appeal/Decreases Robustness
Open: Increases Appeal/Decreases Vitality
Thoughtful: Increases Appeal/Decreases Deftness
Jock: Increases Appeal/Decreases Intelligence
Dreamy: Increases Appeal/Decreases Perspicacity
Evolutionary Stage Bonuses
Every Pokemon gets a certain amount of power simply from being a certain evolutionary level. To help display that, this is where Stage Bonuses come in. These will be determined by your DM when the Pokemon is written up. It'll go as follows:
If a Pokemon is the first evolution of its line, it's considered a "Stage 1" Pokemon. These Pokemon receive a +10 to their two highest base stats, a +5 to their two middle base stats, and no bonus to their bottom two. If a Pokemon is the second evolution of its line, it's considered a "Stage 2" Pokemon. These Pokemon receive a +15 to their two highest base stats, a +10 to their two middle base stats, and a +5 to their bottom two base stats. Finally, any Pokemon that is either the third and final evolution in their line OR is considered a "Legendary" Pokemon, it's considered a "Stage 3" Pokemon. These Pokemon get a +30 to their two highest base stats, a +20 to their middle two base stats, and a +10 to their bottom two base stats.
Hopefully this is a helpful explanation of the new changes to Pokemon, and hopefully you enjoy having your friends come with you on your adventures throughout the multiverse! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! And if you have had a Pokemon since the beginning that needs updating, please go ahead and post its sheet in Write-Up Requests so we can get you a shiny new updated one.
